Nick Evans has been called the first baseman of the future for the New York Mets and has been considered the heir apparent to Carlos Delgado.
The Mets may have to rethink all of that in light of the tremendous struggles Evans is experiencing at AAA – Buffalo.
In 75 at-bats for the Bisons, Evans is batting an abysmal .093 with just 7 hits this season. Three of those hits are homeruns, but that’s no consolation when your cleanup hitter has a .216 slugging percentage.
The 23-year old Evans is on the verge of being demoted back to AA-Binghamton.
Evans had a solid season at Binghamton in 2008 batting .316, with 14 homeruns and 56 RBI’s in 296 at-bats. His OPS of .926 was so good that the Mets called him up to the big leagues hoping to catch some lightning in a bottle.
Nick Evans opened even more eyes when he started in left field last May, and had three doubles in his major-league debut against the Rockies in Denver. Ultimately, he didn’t display the plate discipline of fellow rookie Daniel Murphy, but did show some flashes of his enormous power potential.
It’s now unclear where Evans fits in the grand scheme of things.
