After COO Jeff Wilpon addressed the media prior to the New York Mets final game of the season on Sunday, there was much speculation over which way the team’s search for their next general manager could go.

Late Monday night, Mike Puma of the New York Post added a few names to the list of reported candidates for the position.

Some potential options have already been talked about in the past, including Blue Jays VP of baseball operations and former Red Sox GM Ben Cherington, and former Mets head of scouting Gary LaRocque, who has been with the Cardinals organization in recent years, were named.

Puma listed a couple of other Toronto executives in team president Mark Shapiro and assistant GM Tony LaCava and also tabbed MLB agent Casey Close, Royals assistant GM J.J. Piccolo, and Astros assistant GM Mike Elias as possibilities.

According to Puma’s sources, Braves assistant GM Perry Minasian, who also “has roots in the Blue Jays organization” could be considered a candidate and likely “has a backer in Mets special assistant Omar Minaya”, who will reportedly have some say in the hiring process.

“Jeff Wilpon and [John] Ricco will conduct the initial round of interviews,” Puma wrote. “Fred Wilpon — who will likely make the final call on the hire — isn’t expected to participate in the process until the finalists are selected.”

It seems like the Mets will have their plates pretty full over the next few months.
