According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Mets may be looking beyond their borders to replace outgoing general manager, Omar Minaya.
The Mets are planning to go outside the organization for the GM position and are thought to be considering several people, including former Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes, White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn and former A’s GM Sandy Alderson.
As first reported in Friday’s Daily News, the Mets will meet with Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel after the season ends, and neither are expected to remain in their current roles. Andy Martino also adds that neither has been officially told anything about their job status, despite a report to the contrary by the NY Post.
I think it’s a wise move to go outside the organization, because anything short of that may not have been enough to appease the fans or convince them that true change is on they way. The perception of the fanbase is very important to the Wilpons and declining ticket sales will guide their ultimate decisions and choices this offseason beginning with the person they choose to head baseball operations.
The chance still exists for Minaya to remain in a yet unidentified role, but it has been learned that he has an out clause to walk away if he’s relieved of his GM duties and still collect the $2.5 million dollars owed to him.
While on the same subject, both Heyman and Martino agree that the Mets have not yet requested permission to speak with any GM candidates employed by other teams, and that a new GM will not be immediately named.
One more thing, Jerry DiPoto who was considered to be a top candidate for the Mets according to some reports, will most likely accept the Vice President position for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Also, another name that has been tossed around, Jon Daniels, will most likely be staying put as GM of the Texas Rangers.
