Since the start of the 2018 season, there has been no better pitcher in baseball. In fact, he has done things which have never been seen, and his dominance has led Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez to say deGrom is a taller and better looking version of Pedro.

In deGrom’s completely and utterly dominant start against the Marlins, we would seem deGrom set some Major League records, and we would see him doing things rarely see in the history of baseball.

The start was deGrom’s 31st consecutive start allowing three runs or fewer. This extended his already existing Major League record. This was also deGrom’s 26th consecutive quality start which ties him with Bob Gibson for the Major League record.

In addition to the seven shutout innings, deGrom would strike out a career high 14 batters. His final line was 7.0 IP, 3 H, o R, 0 ER, BB, 14 K. This made him the fourth pitcher in Mets history to allow no runs with three or fewer hits which striking out 14. The other four pitchers were Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, and John Maine.

The dominant pitching over the Marlins wasn’t deGrom’s only feat. After a year in which he received no run support (and just two runs of support on Opening Day), deGrom decided to take matters into his own hands, and he would hit a homer off of Marlins starter Trevor Richards.

With that home run, deGrom would be the ninth pitcher in Major League history to accomplish the feat. The other eight were Dazzy Vance, Warren Spahn, Early Wynn, Pedro Ramos, Bob Gibson, Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, and Madison Bumgarner. With respect to that list, six of the seven pitchers who were eligible were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

With every passing feat, you are seeing him do things which were previously accomplished by Seaver and Gibson. More and more, you are seeing him doing things the greatest of the great have done in the game. The only natural conclusion to this is deGrom is currently pitching at a Hall of Fame level, and that it is why his record setting game against the Marlins was the Neon Moment of the Week!
