Nothing lasts forever and the Mets found that out when their five-game winning streak came to a screeching halt Saturday night in a 3-0 loss to the Washington Nationals.
For the Mets it was their fifth shutout loss of the season and it cut short what had been a phenomenal stretch of run production for the Mets on this road trip.
Initially slated to face Jason Marquis, the Staten Island native was traded before the game and replaced by Nationals pitching prospect Yunesky Maya who tossed 5.1 shutout innings and earned his first major league victory.
R.A. Dickey started for the Mets and his one fatal flaw came early when Jayson Werth took one of his knucklers out of the park for a three run homer in the first inning. That would be all the scoring for the game.
Mets bats came up empty against Maya, but they tried to mount a late charge in the ninth inning that ended when Willie Harris pinch hit and took a called strike three to end the game.
As if the loss wasn’t bad enough on it”s own, the Atlanta Braves won again and the Mets are back to being 7.5 games behind them in the wild card race.
Hopefully the Mets will fare better tomorrow when they send Jon Niese to the mound against Jordan Zimmermann.
