According to Brian Costa of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Washington Nationals have claimed catcher Chris Coste after the Mets placed him on waivers this weekend.

Coste, 37, hit .224/.301/.317 in 230 plate appearances for the Phillies and Astros last year.

After signing with the Mets, Coste made the following comments which understandably ticked many a Mets fan off.

“It’s the last team I ever saw myself playing for.  I knew I was going to accept it, but had to think about it for a few days… It wasn’t my choice to leave Philly… I never wanted to leave Philadelphia, I will always consider myself a Phillie.”

This spring for the Mets, Coste batted .308 going 3 for 13 with a walk.

This will pave the way for Omir Santos to be Josh Thole’s backup in Buffalo when the Mets break camp and head back to New York for opening day.
