I’m excited about tonight’s second round of the Subway Series at Citi Field. There’s always a post season type feel in the air whenever the Mets and Yankees go toe to toe – even though they always seem to be playing at opposite ends of the spectrum.
Although I was originally opposed to inter-league play, I must admit that it eventually took hold of me. But one thing that still irks me about it is that the geographical rivals have to play six games a season against each another rather than three. It has always seemed so unfair to me, and the fact that its only real purpose was motivated by the greed of the money-grubbing owners, only makes it worse.
We have a baseball commissioner whose only priority is putting profit first and the integrity of the game last. That’s his chief responsibility. He’s not our commissioner – he’s simply there to protect the owners’ interest and protect their bottom lines. Fairness and integrity be damned.
The sense of fair play is completely lost in these six-game geographical rivalries because so often it’s just a case of pitting David against Goliath.
While we play against the Yankees, who are 17 games over .500, for a second time this weekend, the Phillies will play the hapless Blue Jays and the Braves take on the last place Orioles – two bottom feeders. Where is the fairness in that?
I’m not saying to get rid of the geographic rival series, but instead of six games, can we please cut it back down to three games?
