According to various sources, including SI.com and MetsBlog, Jose Reyes has now suffered a tear in his right hamstring.  An MRI revealed the new tear, which occurred during one of his running drills on Tuesday at the facility where Reyes was training.

Reyes has been on the disabled list since late May with what was first classified as a torn hamstring tendon behind his right knee.  Recently, in an attempt to perhaps play before the conclusion of the 2009 season, Reyes had been doing some running to test out the hamstring but after reporting discomfort Tuesday, the team had an MRI performed on Reyes, revealing that the hamstring itself was torn.

Although it seems like a necessity now, doctors have not yet announced whether this new tear will require surgery.  Fans who were hoping to see Reyes make an appearance during the final series at Citi Field this weekend will now have to wait at least six months for his next game in Flushing.

In 2010, Jose Reyes will be entering the final year of the four-year, $23.25 million contract extension he signed with the Mets during the 2006 season.  He stands to make $9 million next year and there is an $11 million club option for 2011 with a $500,000 buyout.

Although Reyes is only 26, this is already the third season in which he has missed significant time due to a leg injury.  Next year, the Mets will have some thinking to do about the future of Jose Reyes regarding his club option for 2011.  For now, they should only be concerned about his present and that involves not dilly-dallying and getting the surgery performed as soon as possible.  The Mets will need Reyes healthy for 2010 so he can be the offensive sparkplug the team sorely needed in 2009.
