Mets manager Luis Rojas told reporters on Thursday that they showed the MRI of Jacob deGrom’s right should and both said that everything looked normal. DeGrom was on the field playing catch on Thursday and the Mets have decided they will take a day-to-day approach.

Rojas said the Mets are not currently thinking about putting deGrom on the injured list, but he wouldn’t commit to deGrom making his next start.

Things are looking good for Jacob deGrom and the New York Mets so far.

We aren’t out of the woods just yet but it does appear as though the Mets have avoided a massive disaster with reports suggesting that their ace has avoided serious injury.

Per Jon Heyman of MLB Network, deGrom has seen one doctor today in regards to his shoulder and, according to that doctor, there is no real cause for concern.

Now, it isn’t party time just yet as the Mets will send their franchise cornerstone to another expert in order to glean a second opinion and, given just how important deGrom is to this team, that is a wise tactic indeed.

Given the fact that the 32-year-old has now left two consecutive starts early due to various injuries, there is no such thing as being too careful now and the Mets must treat their stud pitcher with kid gloves and the utmost of care.

However, the fact that one doctor cleared deGrom will come as a major relief in the wake of Wednesday’s scary events when the starter was forced to leave the Mets’ 6-3 win over the Chicago Cubs after just three innings with shoulder soreness.

It disrupted what was another vintage deGrom start as he struck out eight of nine batters in just three innings while lowering his ERA to a historic 0.54 mark.

DeGrom is currently on pace for an unprecedented year on the mound and he is a clear favorite for the NL MVP, especially when you look at his staggering stat line from the 2021 season so far:

  • 0.54 ERA
  • 0.79 FIP
  • 0.507 WHIP
  • 3.5 H/9
  • 13.88 K/BB
  • .885 OPS

Yes, we are witnessing greatness right now.

So, while it isn’t time to take our finger off the panic button just yet, the early news is certainly positive on Jacob deGrom and hopefully the second opinion comes back clear too.
