The Mets fell to the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday by a score of 10-5 (Box Score). They play the new look Miami Marlins tomorrow at 1:10 p.m. The game will be televised on SNY.

The Mets offense looked good early against the Cardinals ace, Carlos Martinez. They worked him hard and he had to depart after 1.1 innings despite throwing over 40 pitches. Kevin Plawecki had a good day at the plate, drawing a bases-loaded walk and hitting a two-run single. Luis Guillorme also homered in the game, something he has only done twice in his professional career.

The pitching was not as good. Seth Lugo went two scoreless, but Marcos Molina and Kevin McGowan could not back him up. They combined to pitch two innings but gave up eight runs in the process.

P.J. Conlon gave up two runs in 1.2 innings but did record three strikeouts. He is currently transitioning to the bullpen.

Gerson Bautista came on and flashed his electric fastball that has been raved about in camp.

Kevin Kernan of the NY Post wrote about how Mickey Callaway really meant the word “accountability.” Kernan wrote, “One Met went into the manager’s office and thanked him for keeping his word on accountability issues, something that wasn’t always done in the past.” It appears Mickey has handled his first challenge as manager with aplomb.

Speaking of Dominic Smith, he seems to have learned his lesson about being late. He joked that he woke up every 25 minutes and arrived to the ballpark at 6 a.m. yesterday. He also played pretty well, reaching base twice while also looking good on defense.

The Pirates signed Kevin Siegrist to a minor league deal. I’m guessing the Mets must truly be comfortable with their bullpen options since they passed on both these guys at cheap prices.
