Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that he expects Starling Marte to rejoin the team today. Marte has been on the bereavement list since last Friday. The Mets will have to make a corresponding move once Marte is activated.

Luis Severino took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, but a dubious fielding decision by Joey Wendle allowed the Cubs to tie the game 1-1 on Nick Madrigal‘s infield grounder. Christopher Morel clubbed a two-run homer off Edwin Díaz in the ninth inning, and the Mets failed to capitalize on their scoring chance against Hector Neris as they dropped the series opener, 3-1.

The Mets will look to get even with the Cubs as they send lefty Sean Manaea (1-1, 3.33 ERA) to the mound against right-hander Javier Assad (2-0, 2.00 ERA). Tonight is also the first-ever Dollar Dog Night at Citi Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM.

Kodai Senga faced live batters on Monday for the first time since landing on the injured list, throwing about 20 pitches to hitters from High-A Brooklyn. Afterward, Senga said through his interpreter that he hit the mid-90s with his fastball and felt good. He added that he expects to return to the club around when he’s eligible to be activated in late May.

Mets prospect Jett Williams has been out of Double-A Binghamton’s lineup since April 21 due to right wrist soreness, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. DiComo added that this issue doesn’t seem to be serious.

Mets pitching prospect Dominic Hamel was named International League Pitcher of the Week. Hamel struck out eight batters in 5 1/3 shutout innings for Triple-A Syracuse.

Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reported Monday that loanDepot Park is the leading candidate to host the World Baseball Classic title game in 2026. The ballpark hosted the title game in 2023 and has drawn large crowds every year the tournament has held games there.

The Mariners have optioned rookie outfielder Jonatan Clase to Triple-A Tacoma and recalled veteran Sam Haggerty. Clase has gone 6-for-27 in the majors this year.

Blue Jays pitching prospect Brandon Barriera underwent a hybrid procedure of Tommy John surgery and an internal brace, performed by Dr. Keith Meister. Barriera is the fourth-ranked prospect in Toronto’s system according to MLB Pipeline.

The Angels have designated outfielder Aaron Hicks for assignment and recalled utilityman Cole Tucker. In addition, they have optioned righty Zac Kristofak and called up another righty, Davis Daniel.

2002: Al Leiter allows just one run on three hits in seven strong innings against the Diamondbacks, becoming the first pitcher to defeat all 30 teams in his career as the Mets trounce Arizona, 10-1. Mike Piazza goes deep twice off Rick Helling and drives in six runs, and Joe McEwing takes Heller deep for a two-run shot.
