To go with that, Seth Lugo will be the Mets fifth starter until Jason Vargas returns according to Anthony Dicomo of MLB.com. With Wheeler sent down and Vargas starting on the DL, it would appear the final spots on the roster will go to Phillip Evans and Jacob Rhame with Robert Gsellman pitching out of the bullpen.
Dave Eiland told reporters following Wheeler’s demotion: “He had an opportunity to make this team, and to be blunt, he just didn’t get it done.” It’s on him. You can only do so much for players, then it’s on them. It’s not about the potential and their capability, it’s about the results.”
