On September 24, 1969, Gary Gentry forced Joe Torre to hit a grounder towards Bud Harrelson. The shortstop tossed the baseball to second baseman Al Weis, who fired on to Donn Clendenon at first to clinch the pennant. In addition to recording the final out, Clendenon was responsible for four of the Mets six runs in the game by hitting a duo of two-run homers. The victory came after an amazing six week streak where the Mets converted a 9.5 game deficit in the National League East standings into a commanding six game advantage over the second place Cubs.
Let’s go Mets!
