Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets lost to the Boston Red Sox by a score of 12-3 Wednesday night. Taijuan Walker had a rough outing, allowing six earned runs in the first two innings before being relieved by Trevor Williams. This loss caps off a two-game mini sweep for the Red Sox and pushes New York’s playoff hopes closer to impossibility. Nate Mendelson of Metsmerized offers a more detailed recap of the game here.

Also, a quick reminder that Pete Alonso was nominated for the Roberto Clemente Award, an honor given to a player “who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.”

Alonso was nominated in 2021 in part for his Homers for Heroes foundation, meant to help essential workers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The first baseman has been  participating in community service in the local New York City area since his rookie season on top of preparing his on the field performance.

On September 24, 1969, Gary Gentry forced Joe Torre to hit a grounder towards Bud Harrelson. The shortstop tossed the baseball to second baseman Al Weis, who fired on to Donn Clendenon at first to clinch the pennant. In addition to recording the final out, Clendenon was responsible for four of the Mets six runs in the game by hitting a duo of two-run homers. The victory came after an amazing six week streak where the Mets converted a 9.5 game deficit in the National League East standings into a commanding six game advantage over the second place Cubs.
