Good morning, Mets fans!

Andy Martino of SNY reports that the Philadelphia Phillies tried to steal Ben Zauzmer from the Mets front office by requesting to interview him for an assistant GM role. However, the Mets stressed to the Phillies that Zauzmer was too important to lose, and they eventually promoted him to assistant GM of the Mets in the following month.

Additionally, Mets top prospect Francisco Alvarez increased his spot on Baseball America’s top 100 MLB prospect rankings from fourteen in 2021 to thirteen in 2022. Brett Baty rose thirteen spots to become 39th on the list after showing well for the Brooklyn Cyclones (High A) and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (AA) in addition to the Arizona Fall League.

While Baseball America looked favorably upon Alvarez and Baty, Ronny Mauricio dropped twenty spots to 92 in 2022 due to his lack of discipline at the plate and Mark Vientos, the 88th prospect on the 2021 list, was removed entirely in this year’s edition.

Stephen Devine has more on this story.

Now, it is time for the morning briefing.

1984: Tom Seaver and the Mets abruptly parted ways. Seaver was reacquired from the Reds for the 1983 season, where he made 34 starts with a 9-13 record and a 3.55 ERA. The reason why Seaver left the mets was that GM Frank Cashen left him unprotected in the annual free agent compensation draft and the Chicago White Sox stole Tom Seaver. However, the extra rotation spot was filled by a young prospect by the name of Dwight Gooden, so maybe losing Seaver at age 39 was not such a big blow to the franchise.
