Morning Briefing: Negotiations for 2020 Season Continue

Good morning, Mets fans! As Andy Martino of SNY reported, several players met virtually to discuss baseball’s economic proposal.

As a result, Nationals Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer came out and tweeted last night that there is no reason to continue to engage with Major League Baseball’s owners about a reduced salary.

He also implied that the owners economic landscape would change if all the information was out in the public. This obviously does not spell hope for a shortened 2020 season as the players and owners are seemingly light years apart with time dwindling down on a deadline to propose an official plan.

One side needs to cave in order for baseball to return this year and it will likely have to come from ownership’s corner. We shall have to wait and see but this latest development does not exactly provide much optimism that a compromise is in the near future.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the players association plans to present their own economic proposal to the MLB by the end of this week.

As Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reported, Padres general manager A.J. Preller played a key role in making sure Padres ownership made this happen.

The Texas Rangers will pay their minor league players $400 a week through the end of June. Given they did not cut guys in spring training so they could pay them during this stoppage, several players are expected to be cut in the coming days, per Levi Weaver of The Athletic.
