Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets took two out of three against their crosstown rival New York Yankees this weekend, by splitting a doubleheader on Sunday.

In game one, a make-up game from Friday’s rainout, the Mets won by a score of 10-5. They trailed 5-4 in the seventh inning but Pete Alonso hit a home run off of Aroldis Chapman to tie the game at five. A few batters later Jose Peraza hit a two run double with the bases loaded to give the Mets a 7-5 lead.

The double was controversial as a fan reached over the wall and caught the ball. It initially looked like a grand slam but was later ruled a double. Brandon Nimmo hit a two-run single later in the seventh to push the lead to 9-5 and the Mets added another run to win 10-5.  Seth Lugo closed it out after a one-two-three seventh inning.

In the night cap, the Mets fell to the Yankees by a score of 4-2. Giovanni Urshela’s three-run homer was the big blow for the Yankees. Pete Alonso became the first Met since Shawn Green in 2006 to homer in both games of a double-header with his two-run home run in the fourth inning.

The Mets took two out of three from the Yankees pushing their record to 43-37. Their lead in the NL East is 3.5 games over the Atlanta Braves. The club now heads to Citi Field to play a three-game series against the first place Milwaukee Brewers. Tylor Megill will take the mound for the Mets in his third career start. All-Star Brandon Woodruff will pitch for the Brew crew. He is 7-3 with a 1.87 ERA this season.

On this day in 1984 the New York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 4-3 in one of the wildest ways to win a game. The score was tied at three in the bottom of the sixth inning with Ron Gardenhire on first base and Mike Fitzgerald on second base after back-to-back singles. Reds catcher Brad Gulden threw behind Gardenhire at first but the ball got away from Reds first baseman Ceasar Cedeno and rolled out into right field. Fitzgerald scored from second to give the Mets the lead. The Mets had the lead in the top of the ninth when the game was stopped due to rain. After a two-hour delay the game was called and the Mets moved their record to 43-34 and pulled to within a game of the division leading Chicago Cubs.

The Mets hit five home runs to beat the Atlanta Braves 9-8 on this date in 1990. Mark Carreon, Dave Magaden, Orlando Mercado, Darrell Strawberry and Kevin Elster all hit home runs at Fulton County Stadium to give the Mets the victory. After Butler stole second with two outs, Rico Brogna walked to bring up Bonilla who hit a single to right to give the Mets the victory.

On this date in 2002, Mike Bacsik made his Mets debut and got the victory in a 5-3 win over the Florida Marlins at Pro Player Stadium. Bacsik pitched 5 innings and gave up just two runs. A seventh-inning two-run homer by current Mets first base coach Tony Tarasco was the difference in the game.

The Mets scored two runs off of Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon to beat the Phillies 6-5 at Citi Field on this date in 2012. David Wright had the walk-off single to right field after the Mets loaded the bases. The game was tied a batter earlier when Daniel Murphy hit a ball back to the mound and off of Papelbon. The ball bounced past the base-path and into foul territory where it was picked up without a play, tying the game at five. Wright would drop a ball in front of Phillies right fielder Hunter Pence, scoring Jordany Valdespin to win the game for the Mets.
