For the first time since July 13, 2022, the Mets defeated the Braves at Truist Park by a score of 10-4. DJ Stewart homered for the fifth time in the past week, Rafael Ortega hit his first home run as a Met, and Francisco Lindor smacked a three-run homer in the winning effort. Jeff McNeil continued his strong month of August with three more hits, and Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso both chipped in multi-hit outings. The Mets bullpen combined for 4 1/3 shutout innings in relief of David Peterson, allowing just two hits and a walk. Phil Bickford earned the win, striking out three in an inning and a third. The Mets are now 6.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot.

The Mets will look to keep the good times rolling in Atlanta with Tylor Megill (7-6, 5.53 ERA) toeing the rubber against All-Star righty Bryce Elder (9-4, 3.46 ERA). Megill struggled against the Braves 11 days ago, allowing nine and five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings in a 7-0 loss. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 p.m.

Mets minor league infielder Cristopher Larez was suspended 56 games for testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug Boldenone, MLB announced Monday. Larez was one of the Mets’ top international signings earlier this season.

In an interview with Tyler Kepner of the New York Times, Orioles owner John Angelos said that his plan to reinvent Camden Yards might be an “existential” issue for the team’s future. Angelos suggested that for the team keep its young core of players, it will have to heavily increase their prices at the stadium.

The Pirates have promoted first-overall draft pick Paul Skenes to Double-A Altoona. He will start for the Curve on Saturday. Skenes has followed up his dominant campaign at LSU with three scoreless appearances in Bradenton.

Braves right-hander Kyle Wright is set to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with a start for High-A Rome. A 20-game winner in 2022, Wright has made just five starts this season due to a shoulder injury.

Major League Baseball announced that last weekend marked the 10th weekend this season that drew more than 1.5 million fans in attendance. The previous four full seasons drew just five such weekends in total.

Wander Franco has hired Pittsburgh-area attorney Jay Reisinger as his lawyer. Reisinger has previously defended players such as Alex Rodríguez, Aroldis Chapman, and Sammy Sosa.

1972: For the second day in a row, Jim Beauchamp plays hero for the Mets, as he homers and drives in all four runs in a 4-2 victory over the Astros. Beauchamp didn’t have any homers entering the day prior.

1984: Dwight Gooden strikes out nine in a complete-game victory over the Padres, becoming the 11th rookie to strike out 200 batters in a season. Gooden allows two runs on three hits with no walks in the 5-2 win.

1999: In the first game of a doubleheader against the Cardinals at Shea Stadium, John Olerud hits a grand slam and Mike Piazza follows with a game-tying solo homer two pitches later in a five-run eighth inning. After St. Louis takes a 7-6 lead in the top of the ninth, Rickey Henderson ties the game with an RBI double, and Edgardo Alfonzo singles him home with the game-winning run.

2006: Trailing 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Carlos Delgado smacks a grand slam for his second homer of the night and the 400th of his career. Still down 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Carlos Beltrán rips a walk-off two-run homer off Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen to cap a stunning, 8-7 victory.
