Good morning, Mets fans!
Tim Healy of Newsday reports that MLB executive Morgan Sword will meet with the New York Mets today regarding the team’s frequency of players getting hit-by-pitches.
This meeting comes after the Mets and St. Louis Cardinals engaged in a bench clearing incident Wednesday afternoon after Yoan Lopez threw up and in on Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, as a result of Mets third baseman J.D. Davis being hit on the ankle earlier in the same game. Previously, Mets pitcher Chris Bassitt pointed blame on the baseballs, claiming that MLB knows the baseballs itself are “bad” and that it’s a widespread issue amongst pitchers. Mets batters have been plunked 19 times in 20 games this season, which is eight more than any other club this season.
After Thursday’s off day, the Mets will return to action at 7:10 p.m. ET tonight at Citi Field against the Phillies.
Now onto the morning briefing!

1996: Mets closer John Franco records his 300th save as the Mets defeated the Montreal Expos 3-2 at Shea Stadium. Franco would become the first left handed pitcher to reach the milestone but it did not come easy. Going with one already out, he gave up an infield hit F.P. Santangelo, who moved to second base on Jeff Kent‘s throwing error. Franco would then strike out the next batter, but almost lost the game as pinch hitter Sherman Obando hit a long fly ball to center, that fell short for the third out.
