On Wednesday afternoon, Tim Healey of Newsday reported that the Mets signed former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha to a one-year deal. Rob Manfred does not anticipate any issues or concerns when it comes to billionaire Steve Cohen’s purchase of the Mets. The approval process should not encounter any “governance issues,” said Manfred, and Cohen is expected to pay a modest $2.6 billion to own 80% of the club come 2025.

Metsmerized’s Michael Mayer reported that the Mets are unlikely to obtain Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte without first shedding some salary. Mayer noted that this would essentially mean that the Mets would have to cut contracts similar to those of Jed Lowrie or Jeurys Familia, or somehow shed those contracts in a deal for the outfielder.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Oakland Athletics would have interest in Jed Lowrie if the Mets would pick up a large portion of his 2020 salary.

On This Date in Mets History

1975: Following a season in which he set a Mets club record with 105 RBI, outfielder Rusty Staub was subsequently shipped off to the Detroit Tigers for pitcher Mickey Lolich after requesting a pay raise (can you blame him?)

1986: Look at all these Kevins! On this day, the Mets sent Kevin Mitchell, Kevin Armstrong, Kevin Brown, Shawn Abner, and Stan Jefferson to the San Diego Padres for Kevin McReynolds, Gene Walter, and Adam Ging.

2005: The Mets decided to take a chance on infielder Jose Valentin following a rather down year from the veteran- and it paid off big time. Valentin began the 2006 season as the backup to second baseman Kazuo Matsui, but after going 6-for-9 with a double, home run, and six RBI over the course of two games in May, Valentin quickly snatched that starting gig for himself.
