Morning Briefing: Mets Still Optimistic About Correa Deal

Talks surrounding the Carlos Correa contract took a brief pause for Christmas, but Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Mets and Correa are both motivated to get a deal done. The two sides were said to be “working on things” on Saturday and there appears to be optimism that they could come to an agreement. Heyman reports that among the topics discussed was the difference between an iffy MRI and the functionality of the joint in question, which has only caused Correa to miss an average of 14 games over the last three seasons.

Heyman also reports that teams are checking in on the availability of Red Sox ace Chris Sale. The seven-time All-Star has a full no-trade clause. While Boston doesn’t plan on dealing any of their starters, they are willing to listen and consider offers. Sale made just nine starts in 2021 after returning from Tommy John Surgery and had another delayed start in 2022 after suffering a stress fracture in his right rib. Sale made just two starts in July before getting drilled in the pinky by a comebacker forcing him back on the IL. Sale’s season ended two weeks later when he fell off his bike while on a rehab stint, breaking his wrist in the process.

The Diamondbacks have added former pitcher Rolando Valles to their major league coaching staff. Valles spent the last four seasons with the Reds organization in an associate coaching position, engaging in both hitting and pitching duties.
