In front of 39,241 fans, the Mets were silenced by Joe Musgrove for seven innings, only managing just one hit and two baserunners all night in a 6-0, season-ending defeat at the hands of the Padres. Chris Bassitt found trouble in the second inning, giving up a two-out, two-strike, two-run single to Austin Nola in the second inning, and San Diego never looked back. The only interesting development from the offensive side of the ball was when Buck Showalter asked the umpires to run a foreign substance check on Joe Musgrove because of something glistening on his ears.

“I’m charged with doing what’s best for the New York Mets. However it might make me look, I’m going to do that every time and live with the consequences. I’m not here to not hurt somebody’s feelings,” Showalter said after the game.

Max Scherzer described the game as “a kick in the balls” and while he spoke highly of his experience this year, he said Sunday was “the worst day of the year.”

For some players, this could be the last time they put on a Met uniform, with Brandon Nimmo and Seth Lugo saying they were trying to soak it all in. Lugo went to take the field one last time after the game, and Nimmo remained in full uniform. Pete Alonso lamented the fact that this particular group is disbanding.

Now, the long offseason begins for the Mets. They will return to regular-season action on March 30, 2023, against the Marlins in Miami.
