The Mets fell back to .500 (70-70) after losing 2-1 in extra innings against the Marlins. Luckily for the Mets, the Phillies and the Braves also lost on Wednesday. More information about the NL East standings can be found below. Edwin Diaz got the loss for the game after allowing the runner starting on second base to score in the bottom of the 10th inning. In honor of the 20th anniversary of September 11, The Amazin’ Mets Foundation teamed up with Operation Gratitude to support first responders to assemble 10,000 care packages to be delivered to the NYPD, FDNY and other first responder agencies.

Aaron Loup plans to stay with the Mets beyond 2021, saying, “I am hoping they intend to sign me back.” So far this season, Loup has a 1.09 ERA in 49.2 innings pitched. 

The Mets have announced details of their game on Saturday (9/11/21). The Mets players will be wearing first responder caps during the game, Bobby Valentine will throw the first pitch to Joe Torre, and Mike Piazza will join some of his Mets teammates from the 2001 Mets squad. Jesús Aguilar was sent to the 10-day injured list with left knee inflammation. Lewin Diaz was called up from the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Triple-A) to replace him.

RHP Zach Eflin will undergo surgery with Dr. Steve Cohen this Friday in Philadelphia to repair his right patellar tendon. His expected recovery time is 6-8 months. Eflin was recently sent to the 60-day IL.

Miguel Cabrera is currently on a seven at-bat hit streak, the longest consecutive hit streak of his career.

On this day in 1969, the Mets moved into first place for the first time in their history. With their doubleheader sweep of Montreal, a 3-2 win in the opener, and a 7-1 win in the night game, the Mets took a one-game lead when the Phillies beat the Cubs, 6-2.
