The Mets are one step closer to hiring a new manager, as the second round of interviews will conclude today. After previously interviewing Joe Espada on and Matt Quatraro a second time, the club will end the week interviewing Buck Showalter later today. Although Showalter is seen as the favorite, Espada and Quatraro seemed to have impressed the teams’ brass enough where their names are still in heavy consideration for the job. Nate Olshan has more on Quatraro specifically and how he’s made an impression on the Mets and their staff.

According to Tim Healey of Newsday Sports, former Mets acting general manager Zack Scott’s DWI trial date has been postponed due to Scott contracting COVID-19. On August 31st, Scott was found in his car asleep on the side of a road after attending a function at owner Steve Cohen’s house hours earlier. Scott was arrested and placed on administrative leave until he was fired by the team in November.

Buster Olney of ESPN reports that Carlos Correa turned down a $275 million deal for 10 years from the Detroit Tigers before the lockout. The Tigers would pivot and sign Javier Baez for 6 years at $140 million.

Marc Tompkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Tampa Bay Rays have promoted Peter Bendix as new GM under baseball operations president Eric Neander. Bendix was previously seen as a possible candidate for the Mets front office during their search.

Baseball Reference released their 2021 year in review which discusses the most talked-about players and pages visited. Most notably, Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom was the most searched player in the states of New York and South Dakota while Francisco Lindor and Jacob deGrom were both 9th and 7th respectively in the top player pages category.

As reported by Lindsey Adler and Jon Heyman, The Yankees have signed outfielder Ender Inciarte and pitcher Jimmy Cordero to minor league deals.

On This Date in Mets History

1999: After the departure of John Olerud to Seattle, the Mets would sign Todd Zeile to fill the hole at first base. Zeile would produce a 2.4 WAR in his first season in Queens along with a .268 batting average, .356 on-base percentage with 22 home runs and 79 RBI’s While not the same as Olerud, his production and glove helped the Mets clinch the NL Pennant. Zeile would play two more seasons with the Mets in 2001 and a reunion in 2004 before retiring.
