Good morning, Mets fans!
The Mets went into Wednesday night’s game against the San Diego Padres trying to further their lead in the race for the third NL Wild Card spot. David Peterson helped the Mets stay at a 2-2 lead through four innings, until one hanging curveball to Manny Machado in the fifth inning brought in four runs as it was deposited into the left field seats. That gave San Diego a four-run lead, which it held onto in a 7-4 victory.
While they did not win on Wednesday, the Mets’ overall lead of 1.5 games stayed the same as the Diamondbacks lost to the Giants. But other teams crawled closer as the Reds’ and Giants’ victories brought them to only 2.0 games behind the Mets.
Jonah Tong (1-2, 8.49 ERA) will take the mound as the Mets face Randy Vásquez (5-6, 3.72 ERA) in the rubber match at Citi Field at 1:10 p.m. ET on Thursday.
