Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets defeated the Padres 8-3 on Tuesday at Citi Field, fueled by home runs from Brett Baty, Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Cedric Mullins. Clay Holmes set the tone with four innings of two-run ball before Sean Manaea took over, allowing just one run over five frames. New York’s offense jumped out early with five runs in the first inning and never let up. The win gave the Mets back-to-back victories as they opened a three-game series against San Diego.

David Peterson (9-5, 3.77 ERA) will start for the Mets, hoping to build on Tuesday’s momentum, while Nick Pivetta (13-5, 2.73 ERA) takes the mound for the Padres. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET on SNY.

NL Wild Card Update

The Diamondbacks walked off the Giants 6-5 after initially trailing 4-0 on Tuesday. It was their fourth straight win, keeping them within 1.5 games of the Mets. The Giants fell to three games back with their fourth straight loss.

The Reds were shut out 3-0 by the Cardinals on Tuesday. Michael McGreevy threw a seven-inning gem for St. Louis, while shortstop Thomas Saggese homered off an Andrew Abbott changeup. The loss drops the Reds to three games back of the third NL Wild Card spot, tied with the Giants, while the Cards’ win keeps their very slim playoff hopes alive at 4.5 games back.

Francisco Alvarez left Tuesday’s game after being hit by a 99.8 mph fastball in the eighth inning with two outs. He appeared to take the pitch to his upper arm, likely the triceps, and was replaced by Hayden Senger after walking to first base. Manager Carlos Mendoza has announced that Alvarez was sore but did not appear to be seriously injured. No X-rays are planned; however, Alvarez was seen with an ice wrap on his arm after the game.

On Tuesday, Metsmerized’s Rafael González looked at Francisco Alvarez’s apparent invincibility — an “Iron Troll,” through and through.
