With the Mets having a day off, their magic number to clinch the division remains at eight with eight games left in the regular season.

The Mets begin a short two-game series with the Marlins tonight. Right-hander Pablo López (9-10, 3.88 ERA) will take the hill for the Marlins against Carlos Carrasco (15-6, 3.79 ERA). The Mets have faced López four times this year and touched him up for 21 earned runs in 16 2/3 innings. New York has also won 12 of the first 17 meetings against Miami.

Pete Alonso was named Co-Player of the Week in the National League alongside Albert Pujols. On the Mets’ recent road trip, Alonso with four homers and drove in 13 runs, while also setting the franchise record for most RBIs in a single season.

2000: Edgardo Alfonzo‘s two-run homer keys a three-run fifth inning as the Mets clinch a playoff berth for the second year in a row with a 6-2 win over the Braves. This marks the first time in franchise history that the Mets have made the playoffs in consecutive seasons. Rick Reed pitches eight strong innings to earn the win, allowing just one run and four hits with seven strikeouts.

2008: Pitching on a torn meniscus, Johan Santana tosses a three-hit shutout to keep the Mets alive in the playoff race. The lefty strikes out nine and throws 117 pitches in the 2-0 victory. With the Brewers’ loss to the Cubs, the Mets enter game 162 tied with Milwaukee for the NL Wild Card.

2012: R.A. Dickey allows three runs and strikes out 13 batters in 7 2/3 innings against the Pirates to earn his 20th victory of the season. Ike Davis hits a solo homer and David Wright caps off a four-run fifth inning with a three-run homer, but the game doesn’t end without some tense moments. In the ninth inning, Jon Rauch serves up a two-run homer to Alex Presley to cut the lead to 6-5 before Bobby Parnell comes in to get the final two outs.

2019: Pete Alonso smacks a solo shot off Dallas Keuchel for his 52nd homer of the year, tying Aaron Judge‘s rookie record. J.D. Davis also homers in a 4-2 win over the Braves.
