Good morning Met fans!

The Mets had a rough night in Miami on Thursday as the team fell 3-2 to the Marlins. The loss means the Mets dropped the series two games to one. Marcus Stroman pitched for the Mets and went 6.1 innings giving up just an earned run on four hits. However, the bullpen couldn’t hold it as Brad Hand and Jeurys Famila struggled in relief. The Marlins took the lead on an eighth inning home run by Jazz Chisholm and never looked back. The Mets record fell to 70-71 and now find themselves five games out of the National League East.

On Friday the second Subway Series of the season begins at Citi Field. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery (5-5 3.47) takes the ball for the Yankees, who come into the series with a record of 78-61. They were just swept in a four-game series by the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.

Tylor Megill (2-4 4.20) is pitching for the Mets. Megill has struggled of late with a 6.44 ERA in six starts in August. In his outing against the Washington Nationals, Megill threw six innings and gave up four earned runs. We’ll see how he does against the Bronx Bombers on Friday in an important series for both teams.

On This Date in Mets History

The New York Mets moved into first place for the first time in franchise history on this date in 1969. The Mets swept the Montreal Expos in a double-header to accomplish the feat. They won the first game by a score of 3-2 in 12 innings. Jim McAndrew threw 11 innings for the Amazins giving up four hits and two runs. McAndrew was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 11th with Ron Taylor coming in in the 12th. Ken Boswell won it in the bottom of the 12th on a single that scored Rod Gaspar. In game 2, the Mets dominated by a score of 7-1. Nolan Ryan threw a complete game, giving up just one run and three hits. The double-header win put the Mets record at 84-57, giving them a 1 game lead in the National League East over the Chicago Cubs.

The Mets took a one-game lead in the division on this date in 1985 by beating the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5-4. The Mets scored five first inning runs off of Cardinals starter Danny Cox, thanks to a Howard Johnson grand-slam. That was enough for Mets starter Ron Darling, who got his 15th win of the season. Roger McDowell helped seal the deal to give the Mets a one game lead over the Cardinals in the NL East.

Pete Schourek threw a complete game one-hitter for the Mets on this date in 1991. The Mets beat the Montreal Expos 7-0. Mackey Sasser and Howard Johnson hit three-run home runs for New York to give Schourek all the support he needed. The only hit he gave up was a Ken Williams single in the fifth. It was easily the best game pitched of Schourek’s career.
