On This Date in Mets History

1964: Jim Bunning strikes out 10 and completes the first regular-season perfect game since 1922 on just 90 pitches in the first game of a Father’s Day doubleheader at Shea Stadium. Bunning also drives in two runs and becomes the first pitcher in MLB history to win no-hitters in both leagues. The Mets don’t fair much better in the nightcap, as 18-year-old Rick Wise holds them to just three hits as the Phillies win 8-2.

2006: The Mets lose 6-5 to the Reds, but Jose Reyes becomes the ninth Met to hit for the cycle. Reyes leads off the bottom of the first inning with a homer against Joe Mays, doubles in the bottom of the third, triples in the bottom of the fifth, and completes it with a single in the eighth.

2016: In their first Citi Field matchup since the World Series, Bartolo Colon exits the game after facing just one batter against the Royals. The 42-year-old is struck by a ground ball off the bat of Whit Merrifield. Hansel Robles picks up the slack though, firing 3 2/3 innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts, and Erik Goeddel, Jerry Blevins, Addison Reed, and Jeurys Familia hold the Kansas City offense at bay in 2-1 victory. Asdrubal Cabrera and Yoenis Céspedes both hit solo homers off Ian Kennedy.

2021: Jacob deGrom continues to dominate his opponents, as he tosses five shutout innings in the Mets’ 4-2 win over the Braves. His scoreless streak has now reached 30 innings and his season ERA lowers to an unthinkable 0.50. DeGrom also becomes the first pitcher ever to go 12 straight starts allowing no more than one earned run.
