For the first time in over a year, Jacob deGrom is set to take the hill for the Mets, as they play the second game of their series with the Nationals. The two-time Cy Young award winner last pitched in the majors on July 7, 2021, against the Brewers. He will be opposed by right-hander Cory Abbott (0-0, 2.25 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The trade deadline is today at 6 p.m. ET. Many moves were made Monday and many more will likely follow today.

The Mets won their season-high seventh game in a row, beating the Nationals 7-3. Brandon Nimmo collected four hits, while Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor both went deep. Max Scherzer went 6 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) while walking two and striking out five. The win was the 197th of the 38-year-old’s career. With the Braves idle, the Mets’ lead in the NL East is back up to 3 1/2 games.

Three of the Mets’ draft picks went unsigned: third-rounder Brandon Sproat, 15th-rounder Jackson Jaha, and 19th-rounder Jackson Lovich. The Mets will receive a compensation pick for Sproat since they offered him a contract.

Two Mets were named to MLB.com‘s Team of the Month. Starling Marte made it as the right fielder, while Edwin Díaz was honored as the relief pitcher.

Right-hander R.J. Alvarez has cleared waivers and been sent to Triple-A Syracuse. The other Met in the DFA limbo, Travis Jankowski, was picked up by the Mariners.

There was a flurry of moves made yesterday, and none came as more of a shock than the Brewers sending flamethrowing closer Josh Hader to the Padres. In exchange for the four-time All-Star, the Padres sent another closer, Taylor Rogers, along with righty Dinelson Lamet, lefty pitching prospect Robert Gasser, and outfielder Esteury Ruiz. Hader had a disastrous 12.54 ERA in July but still paces the majors with 29 saves and has struck out 41.8 percent of batters he’s faced.

The Yankees acquired Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino from the A’s, shoring up their pitching staff. New York’s fifth-ranked prospect Ken Waldichuk headlined the package headed to Oakland which also included righty Luis Medina, southpaw JP Sears, and second baseman Cooper Bowman, all of which were in the Yankees’ top 30 prospects. The Yankees also swung a trade to acquire right-handed reliever Scott Effross from the Cubs in exchange for righty Hayden Wesneski, who was New York’s seventh-ranked prospect.

The Astros acquired Trey Mancini from the Orioles as part of a three-team trade. Houston sent outfielder Jose Siri to the Rays and right-handed pitching prospect Chayce McDermott to Baltimore, while the Rays sent righty Seth Johnson to the Orioles and right-hander Jaysen Murray to Houston. That wasn’t the only trade the Astros made, as they swung a deal with the Red Sox to bring in catcher Christian Vázquez in exchange for infield prospect Emmanuel Valdez and outfielder Wilyer Abreu. Later on, the Astros sent righty Jake Odorizzi to the Braves for lefty reliever Will Smith.

The Red Sox made a couple more moves after trading Vázquez. They acquired outfielder Tommy Pham from the Reds for a player to be named later or cash, and they sent southpaw Jake Diekman to the White Sox for catcher Reese McGuire.

The Braves had a busy day as well, and it started with them extending third baseman Austin Riley on a 10-year contract worth $212 million. Later on, they agreed to a deal with the Tigers for switch-hitting outfielder Robbie Grossman, sending pitching Kris Anglin to Detroit in return.

The Rangers traded right-hander Matt Bush to the Brewers in exchange for infielder Mark Mathias and lefty Antonio Kelly.

The Rays acquired southpaw Garrett Cleavinger from the Dodgers. Minor-league outfielder German Tapia is headed to Los Angeles in return.

The Cardinals brought in lefty Jose Quintana from the Pirates, sending righty Johan Oviedo and infield prospect Malcolm Nuñez to Pittsburgh. The former All-Star is having a bit of a resurgence, turning in a 3.50 ERA in 103 innings.

The Mariners picked up another former Met, Jonathan Villar, who was recently released by the Angels. Villar began the year with the Cubs but was cut after he struggled.

The Rockies announced that they recalled infielder Alan Trejo and placed Kris Bryant on the injured list due to plantar fasciitis. This is the second time Bryant has been put on the IL this year.

Tigers southpaw Tarik Skubal was removed from his start after throwing 77 pitches in five innings due to arm fatigue. Detroit has been rumored to be open to trading Skubal.

2007: Damion Easley hits an inside-the-park homer, and David Wright and Jose Reyes both go deep as the Mets pull away from the Brewers with a 12-4 victory. Brian Lawrence collects his first win as a Met and his first since 2005.

2015: Curtis Granderson, Daniel Murphy, and Lucas Duda all homer in a five-run third inning, and Noah Syndergaard throws eight strong innings as the Mets finish off a sweep of the Nationals with a 5-2 win. The win pulls the Mets into a tie with Washington for first place.
