Good morning, Mets fans!

Francisco Álvarez exited Sunday’s game against the Phillies in the seventh inning after he took consecutive foul balls off his left hand. Buck Showalter said after the game that Álvarez has a finger contusion and that X-rays came back negative. This is the second time this month that Álvarez has had to leave a game early after getting struck by a foul ball.

Ronny Mauricio hit a two-run homer, but that was all the Mets’ lineup could muster as the Phillies secured a four-game sweep in a 5-2 final. José Butto had a rough outing, giving up four runs on four hits with two walks, and striking out five in four innings.

The Mets have a day off today before beginning their final homestand of the year on Tuesday against the Marlins. Joey Lucchesi will take the hill against fellow left-hander Braxton Garrett in the series opener.

The Braves placed veteran righty Charlie Morton on the 15-day injured list with right index finger inflammation. Morton left his last start after one inning. He becomes the second Braves starter to land on the IL this week after Max Fried was sidelined with a blister issue on Friday. Morton will not be eligible to pitch for the Braves in the NLDS.

The Twins activated right-hander Chris Paddack from the IL before their game on Sunday. Once a rising star for the Padres, Paddack made just five starts after being acquired by the Twins in 2022 before undergoing Tommy John surgery.

1973: The Mets honor Willie Mays before their game against the Expos. The Mets then defeat Montreal 2-1 thanks to Cleon Jones‘ sixth-inning homer off Steve Rogers, increasing their division lead to 1.5 games.

2008: The Mets score once in the seventh inning and twice in the eighth inning to tie the game against the Cubs’ bullpen before Carlos Beltrán wins the game with a walk-off single in the ninth. Joe Smith works out of a two-on, one-out jam to earn the win. The Mets enter the final series of the year in playoff position.

2015: The Mets hit three three-run homers – two from Lucas Duda and one from Curtis Granderson – and Noah Syndergaard strikes out 11 in 7 2/3 innings as the Mets down the Reds, 12-5. With the win and Washington’s loss, the Mets reduce their magic number to clinch the NL East to one.

2022: With his two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning, Pete Alonso breaks Mike Piazza‘s single-season franchise record for RBIs. Alonso adds a three-run double later in the game to raise his season total to 128. The Mets get a much-needed 13-4 win to keep their division lead in the NL East.
