Major League Baseball hasn’t seen an expansion since 1998, but that could change in the near future.

According to Tracy Ringolsby of Baseball America, MLB is looking into an expansion that would eliminate the American and National Leagues with potential destinations in Montreal and Portland, Oregon.

Along with a realignment, baseball will see several notable changes, Ringolsby said.

  • Four divisions with eight teams each: East, North, Midwest and West.
  • A 156-game schedule – 24 total games against the eight teams in each of the three other divisions—three games against each opponent.
  • At least one off day a week, either Monday or Thursday guaranteed.
  • Playoff format expansion which would include 12 of the 32 teams.
