How surprising was the Mets hire of Mendoza? For Mike, the fanbase may have been surprised, but internally the Mets knew exactly who their finalists would be:
“I think that it was less of a shock than people may think because we knew that it was down Counsell or Mendoza. From what I heard the Mets did make a substantial offer to Counsell. It wasn’t quite what the Cubs ultimately gave him and the Mets certainly wanted him, but $40 million is also quite a lot for a manager.”
