We have all dreamed of stepping up to the plate in a major league game.

You haven’t? Well, I have. And when I imagine that moment, I definitely think about which song would be blasting in the background, both to get me in the zone and to get the fans pumped.

What would your walk-up song be?

Heartbreaker – Led Zeppelin

C Is For Cookie – Sesame Street

Sexy Can I – Ray-J

I firmly believe that Sexy Can I is the single greatest song of our generation. Its impact knows no bounds. The people love it, so we have to give the people what they want.

I think I’m going to go with Waka Waka by Shakira for no other reason but because it’s just a fun song and would always get the crowd into it. maybe distract the pitcher a little bit when I dance up to the plate.

When it came to walk up music, Daniel Murphy had it down. I never had a chance to play high school baseball, but if I did, the opening riff of Shipping Up to Boston would’ve easily been my choice.

I’d preface my list by saying (respectfully, of course) that if your entrance music doesn’t make you/the people watching you feel something, you aren’t listening hard enough.

Standard: Victim of Changes by Judas Priest: I first heard this song driving to a beer league game I was scheduled to start in, and I’ve kept it in my rotation before every game ever since. This one has a calm medley that progresses into an actual riff before the lead guitar blows the doors off. You could drop it in any pitching highlight reel and I’d watch it.

Overcast: Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones: the opening solo sets up a pretty ominous, uncertain atmosphere before you settle in to Mick Jagger’s vocals. It’s the perfect combination of unnerving and soothing – reminds me of the my walks to high school. Go figure.

Chilly/rainy games: Session by Linkin Park: an instrumental classic! You could cut the tension with a knife, waiting for the next moments. I’d always have it going in my head while our bus pulled in to our 40-degree games on Randall’s Island… it just reduces you and your surroundings really well. Most know it from the Sopranos. That’s how hard it goes.

If I’m picking a walk-up song it would have to be something from ACDC. Walking up to the plate as the crowd goes wild with Thunder Struck or TNT blaring from the speakers would get me beyond pumped up.

Joe

In The Evening – Led Zeppelin

I saw the Page and Plant tour in 1995 at MSG and when they played that the earth stopped spinning.

Tim

Hearing Phish’s Tweezer Reprise turns me up to an 11 in everyday life. I’d imagine hearing it on my way to the plate would put me in an optimal mindset to mash.

Michelle

Growing up very Greek, I would have to go with something that showcases that — likely Zorba the Greek that people recognize, know and can enjoy, too.

So, if I was a rookie, my walk up song would be “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” by Panic! At the Disco. It’s a fun upbeat song that really perfect for that rookie moment in the big leagues. For any walk-up song you want something that is intimidating and upbeat that is going to get you excited and in the zone for an at-bat. So my walk-up song would be one of the following songs, Reaper by Sia, Lovebug by the Jonas Brothers (but it would start at minute 2:29), the beginning guitar solo from Sweet Child O’Mine by Guns and Roses, any part of I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor, or Alive by Daughtry.

All of the songs are intense and if you pick the right moment in each song they can be intimidating to a pitcher as well. I mean, with all of the incredible music out there I really don’t know how I would be able to pick just one song. This list alone took me a bit to put together (and I had three other options I didn’t mention). I have such a diverse music taste that my song choice would really have to depend on the day. If I had more time to deliberate I would most likely have a list of 15 songs across all genres of music to pick from.

I’m really tempted to go all old-school and say since there were no walk up songs when I was a kid, I don’t want a walk up song. However, if that’s too much “Get off my lawn”, I would propose “This is How we Do It,” by Montell Jordan as it’s catchy, and the initial lyrics boast of confidence.

If I get knocked down on the first pitch, the song before the next pitch (I’ve evolved from no song to songs between pitches) should be “I Wont Back Down” by Tom Petty.
