We don’t know when baseball will be back. That is a tough statement to write or even think about, but it’s something that had to be done for all of our safety.

Until baseball comes back though, what are we all doing? There’s no other sports we can watch. We are all social distancing ourselves. How are we getting our baseball fix?

It’s not the same, we know. But here are some ways we are still trying to enjoy baseball.

I really don’t have a way of getting my baseball fix. The most I have at the moment is rewatching things on SNY or watching my brother and dad play MLB20. This has been extremely difficult as watching sports is an escape for me, personally. I’m just trying to get a sports fix in wherever possible!

As someone who relies on sports to occupy my short attention span, the postponement of baseball and all other sports has hit me hard. I’m a college student back home with nothing to do so I have found myself turning towards my boyfriend for my baseball fix. My boyfriend Chris is a coach in a Long Island Men’s league and hearing him discuss his plans of action and his future lineups help me get the little bit of baseball I need. He also makes sure to tell me all about how his team in MLB The Show is doing. Baseball is baseball, no matter where it’s coming from.

Getting a baseball fix in these times isn’t easy but necessary to many. I’ve been reading a lot, sports included, to pass the time. But for baseball, I actually went to the MMO archives and reread some of my initial articles I wrote for the site. It’s not hubris, I wanted to relive things like Pete Alonso‘s record breaking year and the blossoming of players like Jeff McNeil. The Mets have some extraordinary young talent. I also thought about Joe and his hiring of me and smiled when I reflected on my 1 1/2 years with MMO. If they payed me with smiles and pride produced, I’d be a rich man. In preparing for my next piece on the 1960s Mets, I thought about how I became a Mets fan when I was young. I tried to relive those days when the best part of the day was watching the Mets on channel 9. Parts of me still miss that. Finally I get my baseball fix by chatting with all of you. I know the topic has not been much on sports lately, but the fulfillment still exists and for that I say thank you.

The only positive about the sports world getting turned upside down, and I mean the ONLY positive, is that there’s plenty of time to watch game recaps from the 2015 Mets season. That 2015 season felt magical; it was unlike any other Mets campaign I’ve experienced. It was my first time in my life that I thought the Mets could reach the final goal: Win the World Series. Now we all know that didn’t happen, but that didn’t take any from the magic of the season. For the last week, I’ve been scouring YouTube in the hopes of watching some of the more memorable games. Steven Matz’s debut. The Wilmer Game. Kirk Nieuwenhuis’s record-breaking day. The contest in Atlanta where Daniel Murphy smacked a game-tying three-run home run in the ninth. The list goes on. I’ll miss the 2015 Mets. I’ll never forget them.

Nothing is as good as the real thing, but I’m trying my best to still get my baseball fix. YouTube has been pretty awesome with the amount of games (a ton that full length too) that you can find on there. Social media (Twitter/Instagram at the top) are also pretty great with so many baseball centric accounts that post great content. If you’re a documentary fan like me, then you’ll be happy to hear that PBS put all 10 episodes of Ken Burns “Baseball” onto their streaming platform to help us get by without it!

Without baseball, I’ve mostly been watching parts of old games and highlights on YouTube as well as playing hours of OOTP 20 just to briefly remind myself of what the thrill of and beauty of watching baseball is like. I’ve also taken time to rewatch some of my favorite baseball movies such as Moneyball and A League of Their Own. This time has really made me appreciate the luxury of having baseball to watch, and I hope the world can get back in healthy and safe order as soon as possible.

I’m just watching old condensed games on YouTube and remembering just how bad Shaun Marcum was, among many other things. I have nothing against the concept of social distancing, but would love it if there were a clause about playing baseball with other people, because that’s sort of the only other thing I can do to stay sane at this point. If I have to watch Jason Bay run into one more wall, I think I might hit one myself.

Is it possible to reallllllly get a baseball fix without baseball? We’re all trying our best here. From baseball movies to great plays on YouTube to encore games being played, those are all a good start. For me, personally, I have a collection of Mets books and now is the perfect time to read and re-read them. From Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, Mookie Wilson, and Mike Piazza‘s memoirs to “The Bad Guys Won” and Mets trivia books, there is a mix of everything in here. No, it’s not the same, but it’s nice to get lost in them for a while. Also, interacting with all you Mets fan on Twitter helps fill the void, too!
