Yesterday, the Mets called-up Dominic Smith, Jack Reinheimer, and Drew Gagnon. This trio along with Eric Hanhold and Tim Peterson puts the Mets Major League roster at 29 players with the team having the opportunity to add any other players on their 40 man roster to the Major League roster.
With all minor league affiliates seasons completed, the Mets may now look to call-up any of the following:
Gerson Bautista, RHP
Age: 23
MiLB Stats: 3-1, 5.25 ERA, 36 G, 3 SV, 48.0 IP, 1.708 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9, 12.0 K/9
MLB Stats: 0-1, 12.46 ERA, 5 G, 4.1 IP, 3.000 WHIP, 10.4 BB/9, 6.2 K/9
Bautista, one of the three relievers the Mets received in exchange for Addison Reed last year, had a promising start to the season with Binghamton. However, after those three appearances, he was shelled in the majors, and he struggled the rest of the year. August was one of his tougher months with a 6.35 ERA. Still, he has posted impressive strikeout numbers. He’s going to have to somehow learn how to translate that to the major league level whenever he gets that next chance.
P.J. Conlon, LHP
Age: 24
MiLB Stats: 4-9, 6.67 ERA, 22 G, 20 GS, 108.0 IP, 1.657 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9, 6.3 BB/9
MLB Stats: 0-0, 8.23 ERA, 3 G, 2 GS, 7.2 IP, 2.217 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9, 5.9 K/9
In an earlier MMO Prospect Spotlight, it was noted with Conlon’s ability to go through the lineup once and with the plan heading into the season to put him in the bullpen anyway, it would make sense to give Conlon a shot in the bullpen this year.
Instead, that shot went to Daniel Zamora, who has impressed despite some hiccups.
Given his place on the roster and the Mets looking for bullpen pieces for next year, it will be interesting if Conlon gets called-up. It will be more interesting if he actually gets an opportunity.
Luis Guillorme, UTIL
Age: 23
MiLB Stats: .299/.372/.406, 15 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 33 RBI, 2 SB
MLB Stats: .2o9/.284/.239, 2 2B, 5 RBI, SB
Guillorme has suffered a number of indignities this year with him sitting on a Major League bench behind players not producing and with his manager Mickey Callaway essentially calling him a pinch hitter and late inning defensive replacement.
What is so odd about that is when Guillorme has been in Triple-A with extended playing time, he has hit.
Unfortunately, it is debatable if he gets another chance as the Mets opted to call up Reinheimer over him not just this past week but over the past month as well.
Out of all the players on the 40-man roster who has not already been called-up, it would seem Guillorme is the most likely to be called-up within the coming days.
Franklyn Kilome, RHP
Age: 23
Stats: 4-9, 4.18 ERA, 26 G, 26 GS, 140.0 IP, 1.343 WHIP, 3.9 BB/9, 8.0 K/9
Kilome is the best prospect the Mets have added to their system over the past two trade deadlines, and with the Mets, he may be better than initially anticipated when he was the return for Asdrubal Cabrera. Albeit in a small sample size, Kilome has reduced his walks per nine and increased his strikeouts per nine while working with Frank Viola in Binghamton.
With Kilome having thrown 13 more innings than he did last year, and with the Mets perhaps not wanting to start his service clock, it is likely Kilome is done for the season.
In addition to the aforementioned players, there are other players on the 40 man roster who are injured, and therefore will not be added to the active roster, at least not immediately. Jamie Callahan, Phillip Evans, and Chris Flexen are all gone for the year with injuries. There remains a chance we will see Gavin Cecchini and Bobby Wahl, but that will depend on how well their rehab goes.
Additionally, the Mets have candidates like pending minor league free agents in Bryce Brentz and Patrick Kivlehan, who have had good seasons with Las Vegas, but it does not appear the Mets want to give either one an opportunity.
Of course, the player Mets fans want to see most, Peter Alonso, will not get called-up. Instead, he is going to the Arizona Fall League before coming to Spring Training and having yet another opportunity to impress everyone with his ability.
