Sunday was the end of a tough weekend after a tough week for the Mets. Nothing about baseball, especially when it comes to injuries, is supposed to be fair, but right now things feel really unfair. New York’s offense is stuck and overmatched while a crazy number of players are on the injured list. The good news, though, is that despite the Mets’ pitching has kept them in every game, despite being overworked during a crazy stretch. At some point, the Mets’ bats will have to break out. Could Monday be the night?

David Peterson will be the first true starter in a couple of days to take the mound for New York. He has made eight starts this year and pitched 38.0 innings with a 4.97 ERA, 4.12 FIP, 1.26 WHIP and a 78 ERA+. He’s coming off of an average start in Atlanta where he allowed three runs over 4.2 innings from five hits and a walk, while striking out five. Generally, he’s followed a pattern this year of following an average-to-bad start with a good one, so hopefully the pattern holds again. He missed the Rockies earlier in the year when the Mets made a cold trip out west, and no one on the Rockies’ roster has faced him in a major league game.

Mets Lineup

  1. Jonathan Villar — 3B
  2. Francisco Lindor — SS
  3. James McCann — 1B
  4. Dominic Smith — LF
  5. Tomas Nido — C
  6. Jose Peraza — 2B
  7. Cameron Maybin — RF
  8. Johneshwy Fargas — C
  9. David Peterson — P

Rockies Lineup

  1. Raimel Tapia — LF
  2. Trevor Story — SS
  3. Charlie Blackmon — RF
  4. C.J. Cron — 1B
  5. Ryan McMahon — 2B
  6. Josh Fuentes — 3B
  7. Garrett Hampson — CF
  8. Elias Diaz — C
  9. Austin Gomber — P

New York’s bats will try to come alive against Austin Gomber. In nine starts this year, he has tossed 45.1 innings with a 4.96 ERA, 3.97 FIP, 1.30 WHIP and a 92 ERA+. He’s had two strong starts in a row, allowing two runs (one earned) over 11.1 innings while striking out 13 batters. Before that stretch, he pitched 12.2 innings across three games, allowing 18 runs (16 earned) from 18 hits and five walks. For a Rockies pitcher, it seems important to note that all three of his bad starts were on the road, while he has one road and one home start on this current good streak. Gomber missed the Mets a few weeks ago and a few Mets have seen him when they played for other teams:

  • Francisco Lindor 1-2
  • Cameron Maybin 0-0, BB
  • Jose Peraza 1-7
  • James McCann 0-3, 2 K

Let’s Go Mets!
