The Mets had a successful Home Opener yesterday with Jacob deGrom delivering a very strong performance despite leaving the game after six innings with right lat tightness. The Mets also had some solid situational hitting from Neil Walker and Michael Conforto as the Mets rolled over the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2.
The veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon makes his first start of the season today and is chasing history. Colon can match Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez for second on the all-time wins list among Dominican-born pitchers. Juan Marichal ranks first with 243 wins.
Bartolo basically had the same season last year as he did in 2014. He went 14-13 (15-13 in 2014) and pitched 194.2 innings with a 4.16 ERA (4.09 in 2014). Big Sexy went 4-1 over give starts against the Phillies last season, tossing 32.0 innings with a 2.81 ERA and 32 strikeouts.
Although this is his first start of the season, he already came out in relief during the first game of the season logging 1.1 innings, 1 hit, no runs, no walks and one strikeout. The Phillies have the following numbers against Bartolo:
- Howard 5-24, 2 HR
- Ruiz 5-18, 2B
- Glavis 4-15, 2B
- Rupp 2-10
- Blanco 3-6, 2B
The Mets will get their very first look at Vincent Velasquez who is 1-1 over 19 games including 7 starts logging 55.2 innings while posting a 4.37 ERA. The Phillies acquired Velasquez in a trade last December that sent Ken Giles and Jonathan Arauz to Houston for Mark Appel, Harold Arauz, Thomas Eshelman, Brett Oberholtzer and Vincent Velasquez. Vincent has never faced the Mets before but De Aza has seen him and went 1-2.
Let’s Go Mets!
