The Mets continue their series in San Diego against the Padres, winners of nine of their last 11 games. Dillon Gee (4-1, 2.56) opposes right-hander Tyson Ross (7-10, 2.85) in an 8:40 PM matchup.

Seven of Dillon Gee’s nine starts have been quality starts this season. Prior to being placed on the DL with a strained right lat, Gee had the third-lowest ERA (1.36) in the majors. He returned from the DL on July 9 vs. Atlanta and tossed 7.0 innings and allowed just one run.

First-round pick Michael Conforto is due to make his professional debut Saturday for the Brooklyn Cyclones as the designated hitter. Brooklyn hosts Williamsport at 6:00 PM.

Jon Niese threw during the Mets’ Friday afternoon workout and reported no problems with the shoulder strain that has him on the disabled list. “He feels good,” Terry Collins said. “We’ll have to make a decision when he is ready to pitch again.”

Daisuke Matsuzaka is headed to the bullpen, although the Mets do not intend to use him there Saturday or Sunday. They first want to be 100 percent sure Niese will be able to come off the disabled list on Monday to face the Seattle Mariners.

in 17 games since returning from Las Vegas (AAA) on June 24. He has at least one hit in 15 of those 17 games and has reached safely in 16 of 17.
