The Mets lost to the Nationals yesterday in a clunker. Robert Gsellman allowed five runs early and it looked like a lost afternoon for the Amazin’s. Eventually the Mets brought it to 6-4 with two outs and the go-ahead run at the plate for Travis Taijeron, but he grounded out and the bullpen imploded after that. You know what the Mets need after dropping yesterday’s game against the Nationals? Two Sunday games! The Mets have been horrendous on Sundays this year and today they will be faced with the tall task of two of them.

NOTES:
The Mets average age is 27.1, the fourth youngest in the majors according to ESPN.com. Nine players from New York’s Opening Day roster remain on the active roster (Jerry Blevins, Asdrúbal Cabrera, Travis d’Arnaud, Jacob deGrom, Wilmer Flores, Rafael Montero, José Reyes, Hansel Robles and Josh Smoker). Only Blevins and deGrom have been active the entire year without being sent to the minors or placed on the DL.
Wilmer Flores slugged his 16th home run yesterday, tying his career-high (2015 & 2016). He is one of five Mets to have three seasons of at least 15 home runs at age 25 or younger. The other four are Darryl Strawberry (five such seasons), David Wright (four times), Lee Mazzilli (three times) and John Milner (three times). Flores has nine home runs in 102 at-bats in the second-half.
Mets relievers have allowed seven earned runs over their last 35.0 innings (1.80 ERA) over their last 10 games. Since August 8, the Mets bullpen has posted a 2.14 ERA (15 earned runs/63.0 innings).
David Wright played 5.0 innings at third base last night for St. Lucie (A) at Palm Beach. Wright went 0-3 with a strikeout and had two assists in the field. Wright is 1-10 in three rehab games. He has been on the DL since the beginning of the year with cervical disc herniation.
