Whoa. Last night was bleak.

The Mets finally returned to baseball last night with two seven-inning doubleheaders against the Marlins. The first game, which was mercifully delayed by a storm, was terrible from the start. The Mets started off in a hole and then couldn’t buy a hit with runners in scoring position. There was one bright spot though – Corey Oswalt – who allowed only just one hit in four innings of outstanding relief.

In the second game, Seth Lugo had a great start, striking out five across three perfect innings. The problem – the Mets couldn’t get any hits.

Anyway the Mets hope to get things back on track tonight, after shaking off the rust yesterday. What better way to do just that then with Jacob deGrom!

DeGrom will make his sixth start of the season today. Over his first five starts he has pitched 28 innings with a 1.93 ERA, 2.10 FIP (league-leading), 0.893 WHIP and a 220 ERA+. His last start came against the Marlins and was his best start of the season. He shut out the Marlins over six innings with seven strikeouts.

Actually DeGrom’s last two starts were both against the Marlins, pitching 11 innings and allowing 11 hits, two walks and two runs, while racking up 13 strikeouts. The Marlins have the following numbers against Jacob:

The Mets bats will try to break out of their funk against Elieser Hernandez tonight. In his first four starts of the year, he has pitched 19 2/3 innings with a 2.29 ERA, 3.34 FIP, 0.763 WHIP and 195 ERA+.

Last year he pitched in 21 games, 15 starts, totaling 82 1/3 innings with a 5.03 ERA, 5.58 FIP, 1.239 WHIP, and a 84 ERA+. He faced the Mets twice in relief last year and allowed just one hit, a solo homer off the bat of Robinson Cano.

Game Notes

The doubleheader between the Mets and Yankees on Friday will begin at 4:05 p.m. with Game 2 set to play approximately 30-45 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1. The Yankees will be the home team in the Game 1, with the Mets taking the last at-bats as the “home team” in Game 2.

On Saturday, the lone nine-inning single game of the series between the Mets and Yankees will start at 1:05 p.m.

Finally the doubleheader on Sunday is scheduled to begin at 1:05 p.m. The breaks between games and home team designations will be the same as the first doubleheader on Friday.
