Citi Field • Flushing, N.Y.
RHP Braden Shipley (1-1, 4.15) vs. RHP Noah Syndergaard (9-6, 2.64)
SNY • WOR 710 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

The Mets bullpen faltered again, this time in the 12th inning, as the Mets lost their second straight game to the Diamondbacks. Yesterday the Mets didn’t get on the board until a 2-run homer from Kelly Johnson in the bottom of the ninth, wasting a strong a start from Bartolo. So, for a second straight game, while the direct cause of the losing feels like the bullpen, the bats put the team in a position for the bullpen to lose. Things should be a little better today with Thor on the mound because he can also swing a bat, maybe give some life to this team.

Mets Lineup

  1. Alejandro De Aza – CF
  2. Neil Walker – 2B
  3. Jay Bruce – RF
  4. James Loney – 1B
  5. Kelly Johnson – 3B
  6. Michael Conforto – RF
  7. Rene Rivera – C
  8. Matt Reynolds – SS
  9. Noah Syndergaard – RHP

Diamondbacks Lineup

  1. Jean Segura – 2B
  2. Michael Bourn – CF
  3. Paul Goldschmidt – 1B
  4. Jake Lamb – 3B
  5. Chris Owings – SS
  6. Brandon Drury – LF
  7. Socrates Brito – RF
  8. Tuffy Gosewisch – C
  9. Braden Shipley – SP

Syndergaard is 9-6 over 22 games and 21 starts over 129.1 innings with a 2.64 ERA. He’s in the midst of a very human stretch pitching 18.0 innings in his last three starts with a 4.00 ERA but still recording 21 strikeouts. He had one start against the Diamondbacks last year and it was a good one going 8.0 innings, allowing only 1 run and recording 13 K’s. Arizona has the following numbers on Thor:

  • Goldschmidt 0-3
  • Lamb 0-3
  • Owings 0-3
  • Tomas 1-3
  • Bourn 0-2

The Mets bats will get a look at Branden Shipley making his 4th major league career start. So far this season he is 1-1 over 3 game sand 17.1 innings with a 4.15 ERA. His numbers look better when you toss out his first start, in his last two he has allowed only 2 ER over 12.0 innings of work. Since he made his debut in late July, it is not surprising that this will be his first time facing the Mets or anyone on the Mets roster in a major league game.

Let’s Go Mets!
