The nightcap in tonight’s doubleheader is a marquee matchup. A battle of the Max’s. Scherzer vs Fried. It’s actually the first of two straight games boasting a pitching duel between two starters as tomorrow deGrom takes on Spencer Strider. The baseball universe for the next 24 hours or so will be centered at Citi Field.

Max Scherzer over 14 starts and 88 2/3 innings has a 2.13 ERA, 2.64 FIP, 0.925 WHIP and a 188 ERA+. He’s coming off an average (for anyone else) start in DC where he allowed three runs, two earned, over 6 2/3 innings. Since returning from the injured list, Scherzer has a 1.62 ERA and 2.24 FIP over six games and 39 innings of work. This includes a start against the Braves in Atlanta where he held the Braves to one run from three hits over seven innings while striking out nine. The Mets bats will get another look at Max Fried. Fried has made 21 starts logging 132 1/3 innings this season. He has a 2.58 ERA, 2.47 FIP, 1.073 WHIP and a 162 ERA+. His success this year comes from league leading HR/9 rate at 0.4, which is half of his career mark at 0.8. Interestingly, he also leads the league with seven wild pitches, which already matches his total from last season.

Fried is coming off of a strong start against the Diamondbacks where he held them to no runs and four hits over seven innings of work. Before that he allowed eight runs over 18 innings (4.00 ERA, 2.22 FIP) from 21 hits and five walks. This includes a start against the Mets where he allowed two runs over five innings.
