The Mets dropped a tough one on Friday night at PNC Park, falling to the Pirates by the score of 3-2 in extra innings.
After a very wild Vic Black allowed a one out walk to pinch hitter Clint Barmes in the bottom of the 11th and then Josh Harrison launched a walk-off RBI double to give the Bucs a dramatic win.
It was the third straight loss for the Mets who are now in last place and eight games under .500.
The Mets got on the board first after a two-run single by Lucas Duda in the fourth inning, but once again they couldn’t buy a timely hit for the rest of the game. On the plus side, catcher Travis d’Arnaud had three of the Mets’ nine hits.
Jacob deGrom started the game and pitched well, allowing just two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four. The young righty was composed and pitched brilliantly at times, but he certainly didn’t help himself when he failed to cover first base and allowed the Bucs to extend the inning and score two runs to tie the game at 2-2.
Jenrry Mejia came up big in the 10th inning when the Bucs put runners on second and third with nobody out after a botched call by the umps. The Mets closer slammed the door and got out of the jam to send the game to the 11th.
Jon Niese (4-4, 2.78) gets the start on Saturday and opposes right-hander Gerrit Cole (6-3, 3.64) in a 4:05 PM matchup.
