The New York Mets were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 6-5 in a 14 inning marathon at Citizens Bank Park.
The winning run was unearned and the result of Marlon Byrd hitting a routine fly ball to right field which was dropped by Chris Young to open the floodgates..
With the bases loaded after an intentional walk, Jenrry Mejia surrendered a walk-off single to Reid Brignac to score Byrd and give the Phillies a big win.
The Mets wasted no time getting on the board with an early 3-0 lead after two innings thanks to an RBI double by Lucas Duda and a single to drive in a run by Ruben Tejada. However the lead would be short-lived.
Rafael Montero started for the Mets and had a very rough go of it, lasting just 3.2 innings before he was pulled from the game by Terry Collins in the fourth. Montero allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits including a three-run bomb by Dominic Smith.
The young righty walked two and had no strikeouts coming off a 9 K performance in his previous start. He was also the victim of some shoddy play in the field which included a pair of errors from Bobby Abreu (fielding) and Travis d’Arnaud (throwing).
Montero becomes only the third pitcher in Mets history to allow at least one home run in each of his first four big-league starts.
Daisuke Matsuzaka relieved Montero and got the final out in the fourth after third baseman David Wright ran into no-mans land in right field and made a spectacular behind the back diving catch to save at least another run.
Bobby Abreu would atone for his miscue in the fifth when he put the Mets back in front 5-4 with a two-run double to score Daniel Murphy and Juan Lagares who started the rally with a single. But after an intentional walk to Lucas Duda to put runners at first and second, d’Arnaud struck out to end the inning.
Dice-K allowed the Phillies to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth when Marlon Byrd scored on a fielders choice by Domonic Brown, and the game would remain 5-5 all the way past regulation and into extra innings.
Both bullpens did a great job keeping both teams scoreless until the 14th when it all came crashing down for the Mets.
The Mets and Phillies will go at it again in a Saturday matinee that begins at 3:05 PM. Rookie righthander Jacob deGrom (0-2, 1.83) gets the start for the Mets and will oppose RHP Kyle Kendrick (1-5, 4.04) for the Phillies. Should be a good one…
