The New York Mets (46-52) dropped the rubber game against the San Diego Padres (43-55) this afternoon at PETCO Park.

Yasmani Grandal gave the Padres a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run.
Zack Wheeler pitched well enough to earn a win today, but had no offensive support. Wheeler would pitch six innings, allowing one run on eight hits, striking out seven and walking one.
Odrisamer Despaigne held the Mets hitless for 7 and 2/3rd’s innings before allowing a two-out double to Daniel Murphy in the top of the eighth inning. Despaigne would take a no-decision, as David Wright subsequently drove in Daniel Murphy with a single up the middle, ending Despaigne’s day.
The Padres would threaten in the bottom of the eighth inning with runners on first and third and one out, but Jeurys Familia would induce the inning ending double play.
Vic Black came on in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowed a walk, and then misplayed a ball, putting runners on first and second with one out. After inducing a double play, Cameron Maybin would reach third, and then score the winning run, when Josh Edgin fell down fielding a lightly hit ball, and failed to get the runner out at first.
The Mets, after winning nine of their then eleven games, dropped the final two games of this series to a San Diego Padres team who is dead last in the league in runs scored, hits, and batting average.
To make room for Jonathon Niese on the active roster in time for his start tomorrow, relief pitcher Buddy Carlyle has been designated for assignment.
