The Mets (71-76) lost the series opener against the division leading Washington Nationals (82-62) by a score of 6 to 2.
What you should know:
This was an emotional game for both teams and it seemed as if the emotions got the better of Bartolo Colon. Colon got the loss, giving up 5 earned runs including 2 home runs. He falls to 13-12 on the season.
More important than the home runs themselves were Colon’s reactions. He hit the batters following each of the home runs leading to his ejection in the 4th inning. Terry Collins was also ejected in that frame standing up for his starter.
The Mets offense blew a few big opportunities. They left a number of men on base and ran themselves out of a few innings with some very bone-headed errors. Travis d’Arnaud got caught running on a pop up and didn’t retreat to first. He was easily doubled off.
In the 8th inning, the Mets loaded the bases with one out but Lucas Duda lined out hard to short and Anthony Recker, who had hit a solo home run earlier in the game, struck out against Tyler Clippard.
Tanner Roark (13-10) got the win for that Nats, going 6.1 and giving up just 2 runs.
