dilson herrera homers

The New York Mets defeated the Houston Astros by a score of 3-1 this afternoon at Kissimmee, Fla. for their first Grapefruit League win of the Spring.

The Mets were down 1-0 going into the fifth inning when they broke through with a pair of runs to take the lead thanks to a double by Eric Campbell, an RBI triple by Dilson Herrera, and sacrifice fly by Michael ConfortoStefan Sabol gave the Mets an insurance run in the ninth inning with a sac fly.

Matt Reynolds and Dominic Smith each had a pair of hits, although Smith caught an earful from Terry Collins and some of his teammates for jogging to first base on a deep drive to the wall that should have been at least a double.

On the mound, Robert Gsellman started the game and went two innings allowing a run on three hits. After that, Antonio Bastardo, Josh Smoker, Zack Thornton, Seth Lugo, Jeff Walters and Hansel Robles combined for seven scoreless innings of relief. Only Smoker was perfect, striking out a pair in his inning of relief.

Notes:

Former Met Collin McHugh started for the Astros and allowed one single in two scoreless innings.

Josh Smoker is making me look good, my preseason favorite to win the final bullpen spot is dominating.

Dilson Herrera is impressing a lot of people in camp. He could force Mets hand to release Ruben Tejada who was 0-for-2 today.

An apologetic Dominic Smith admitted he went into a home run trot thinking he had homered in the first inning. Terry Collins ripped into him and assured reporters after the game that “He’ll never do that again. He learned his lesson.”

Up Next: LHP Sean Gilmartin will start on Sunday for the Mets against the Braves at Tradition Field. First pitch will be at 1:10 PM.
