The Mets (38-37) the Reds (34-28) tonight at Citi Field by a score of 2-1.
After Noah Syndergaard set down the side in order in the top of the first, Curtis Granderson lead off the bottom half of the frame with his twelfth home run of the year, eight of which have been solo shots.
In the second inning, the Reds evened the game up after a couple of singles from Jay Bruce and Brayan Pena to start the inning. Eugenio Suarez hit into a fielder’s choice, which put runner’s on the corners. Chris Dominguez then grounded out to short to score Bruce.
Ruben Tejada was hit by a pitch in the fourth, and initially stayed in the game, but was replaced by Eric Campbell after the inning. He was diagnosed with a contusion on his elbow, and is considered day-to-day.
Michael Cuddyer reached on a fielding error, which put runners on first and third with no outs. Wilmer Flores then hit a ball to Reds’ third baseman Todd Frazier, who came home on the play, catching Ruben Tejada in a run down. Juan Lagares then grounded out to end the inning.
In the fifth inning, Dilson Herrera hit a long triple to right center field with two outs. Johnny Cueto then proceeded to walk the next three batters to face him, which forced in a run, putting the Mets up 2-1. However, Michael Cuddyer had a chance to bust the game wide open, but lined out to central, leaving the bases juiced.
The 2-1 lead was all Noah Syndergaard would need, as he pitched eight strong innings, allowing just the one run on five hits, while walking none and striking out five. He improves to 3-4 on the season.
Jeurys Familia finished off the game, pitching a clean ninth, earning his 21st save of the year.
It was the first time since 2009 that the Mets won a game with only two hits.
