MLB: Miami Marlins at New York Mets

The Mets (72-79) were defeated by the Miami Marlins (73-76) tonight at Citi Field by a score of 6-5.

What you should know:

Jacob deGrom was fantastic again this evening, as he struck out the first eight batters to greet him to start the game, tying a major league record that was originally set by Jim Deshaies of the Houston Astros in 1986. DeGrom would strike out 13 batters altogether, while allowing three runs on six hits over a span of seven innings, and unfortunately taking a no decision.

Wilmer Flores got the Mets on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning as he laced a double to left center field to score Travis d’Arnaud and Lucas Duda.

The score remained 2-0 until the top of the seventh when former Met Jordany Valdespin singled to shallow left field to score Justin Bour and Adeiny Hechavarria.

Valdespin would subsequently score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Reed Johnson.

Miami didn’t hold the lead for long as the Mets took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Daniel Murphy singled home a run, followed by a broken bat double to left field from Travis d’Arnaud. Curtis Granderson later walked with the bases loaded to force in a run to put the Mets on top 5-3.

Jeurys Familia came on in the top of the eighth and was ineffective, as he was charged with three runs, putting the Marlins back on top.

The Marlins would hold this lead and seal the win, beating the Mets 6-5.

Player of the Game:

Despite losing, the game ball still goes to Jacob deGrom, who struck out thirteen batters, and most certainly deserved a win.

On deck:

The Mets take on the Marlins again tomorrow night, with Bartolo Colon (13-12, 4.14 ERA) taking on Nathan Eovaldi (6-11, 4.29 ERA)
