The New York Mets were defeated by the Miami Marlins by a score of 2-1 on Monday afternoon at Tradition Field.

Jacob deGrom started for the Mets and tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out five Marlins in a 59-pitch effort. There was some concern about deGrom’s velocity which topped out at 93 mph today, down a couple of ticks from his 2015 average of 95 mph.

However, deGrom has still been getting great results as his 0.90 Spring ERA would attest. He told reporters after the game that he was unconcerned. “I feel like it will come,” deGrom said. “That was on short rest. I’m getting everything back in line mechanics-wise, everything will be there. It’s spring training. I’m not worried about it all.”

“I felt fine out there. The swings and misses tell you the most. It doesn’t matter what that gun says. If the guy is late on a fastball, they’re obviously doing something right. The object is to get outs the last time I checked.”

The Marlins scored their two runs in the eighth inning off setup man Addison Reed who allowed three hits and a walk. But he wasn’t helped by by a throwing error by catcher Kevin Plawecki that allowed one of those runs to score. Jeurys Familia pitched a scoreless ninth despite allowing a pair of hits. Sean Gilmartin and Jerry Blevins each pitched a perfect frame.

The only Mets run came in the ninth when they tried to mount a comeback. But after a Daniel Muno grounder to plate Juan Lagares, they stranded the tying run in scoring position to end the game.

Note: David Wright went 0-for-3 with a strikeout while playing five innings at third base. It was Wright’s first time playing in back-to-back games this spring.

Up Next: The Mets now travel to Tampa to play the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. LHP Steven Matz will start for the Mets and oppose RHP Luis Severino in a 6:35 PM matchup.
